William III (1694-1702),silver Shilling, 1697, E of DEI struck over an A, first laureate and draped bust right, legend and toothed border surrounding, GVLIELMVS. III.DEI.GRA.,rev.crowned cruciform shields, Lion of Nassau at centre, date either side of top crown, .MAG. BR.FRA. ET.HIB. REX., weight 5.81g (Bull 1124 R3; ESC 1094A; S.3497).Toned with surface marks both sides and some weakness, a bold fine and an intriguing error in the legend with a good provenance.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "William III by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
The E was concluded to be most likely over an A by the late Roger Shuttlewood from whom whose collection this coin emanates from.
