William III (1694-1702),silver Sixpence, 1696, error reverse with legend out of rotation with shield design, first laureate and draped bust right, legend and toothed border surrounding, GVLIELMVS. III. DEI. GRA.,rev.crowned cruciform shields, large crowns, Lion of Nassau at centre, legend out of sync by one quarter turn, date therefore either side of crown over Scottish arms, Irish harp with three strings, legend surrounds, .MAG BR.FRA ET.HIB REX., edge grained, weight 3.07g (Bull 1214 R4; ESC 1534B R4; S.3520).Toned, with some spots and circulation wear both sides, good fine, reverse better, extremely rare with a good provenance.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "William III by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
This is the finest survivor we have seen of this extremely rare variation of which we only know of three examples extant.
