William and Mary (1688-94),gold Half-Guinea, 1691, second conjoined busts right, legend surrounding, GVLIELMVS. ET. MARIA. DEI. GRATIA, toothed border around rim both sides,revsecond crowned quartered shield of arms, crown with interior, Lion of Nassau as an escutcheon at centre, date either side of crown, .MAG. BR. FR. ET. HIB. REX. ET. REGINA. (Schneider 476; Bull EGC 385; MCE 163; S.3430).Once cleaned now lightly toned with some smoothing in obverse field, otherwise good fine and rare.
The Latin legends translate to on obverse "William and Mary by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King and Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
The calendar year output of gold for 1691 is the smallest of the joint reign at a total of only £54,497 was issued across all four denominations though the Two Guinea with elephant and castle is the rarest.
