William and Mary 1689 Maundy Penny GVIELMVS error CGS UK 40

William and Mary (1688-94), silver Penny, 1689, conjoined busts right, withlegend continuous over bust, GVIELMVS spelling error with G of legend below busts, some stops absent, GVIELMVS ET. MARIA D G., rev. inverted die axis, crowned 1 of value, legend and date surrounding, MAG. BR. FR. ET. HIB. REX. ET. REGINA. (Bull 963 R5; ESC 2299 R5; S.3444). Toned with some streaks and flan adjustment marks, reverse struck off-centre and date not visible, a one year only type with obverse legend continuous over bust, the rarest variety with the spelling error, has been graded and slabbed by CGS UK as CGS 40, extremely rare.

CGS certification 38459-M1.WM.1689.02.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "William and Mary by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King and Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

The 1689 silver Penny is a one year only type and is the rarest maundy coin of the whole series.
