William and Mary 1689 Guinea, denomination 1st year for reign

William and Mary (1688-94), gold Guinea, 1689, conjoined busts right, legend surrounding, GVLIELMVS. ET. MARIA. DEI. GRATIA, toothed border around rim both sides, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, later Irish harp with 6 strings, Lion of Nassau as an escutcheon at centre, date either side of crown, .MAG. BR. FR. ET. HIB. REX. ET. REGINA., weight 8.31g (Schneider 467; Bull EGC 360; Farey 0312 ER; MCE 148; S.3426). Brightly polished and an ex jewellery piece with smoothed edge around top half, slightly sweated though design and legend details clear, fine.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "William and Mary by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King and Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

We note the gold output from the Mint in this first year of the coinage was £128,442, the highest of the short joint reign.
