Victoria (1837-1901),silver Groat, 1888, jubilee head left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REGINA F: D:rev.Britannia seated right with trident and shield, date in exergue, FOUR PENCE legend surrounding, weight 1.90g (Bull.3359; ESC. 1956; Robinson p.175 and plate 88 this coin; S.3930). Few hairlines, mottled tone, about extremely fine.
The Latin legend translates as "Victoria by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."
This actual coin is illustrated as plate 88 in Silver Pennies and Linen Towels by Dr Brian Robinson in relation to page 175 where he remarks that the die used for the obverse bust has a legend continuous over the bust like the maundy coinage.
