Victoria 1887 Two-Pounds, MS60, rarest currency issue with proof obverse die
Victoria (1837-1901), gold Two Pounds, 1887, Jubilee type crowned bust left, angled J type J.E.B. initials on truncation, rarer obverse die with the B of BRITT starting just above the right side of crown, 8 pearls to each arch of crown, thinner obverse rim not encroached by cross on top of crown, VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:, no indent at rear of bust for final colon, rev.St George and dragon right, smaller date in exergue, tiny B.P. to upper right of exergue (DISH C205 and page 9; Dyer obverse 1b / reverse 2; Hill T24 R5; Bull EGC 1315 R5; S.3865). Somewhat proof-like as usual for this very rare variety, though with a number surface marks and hairlines in fields, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as MS60 but variety not recognised in labelling, very rare with its existence thought to relate to a one day mintage in July 1887 of 350 pieces.
NGC Certification 5879554-024.
The Golden Jubilee year for Queen Victoria and the first Double Sovereign of the reign, which has a reported Calendar year mintage of 91,345.
For the most up to date story of the 1887 Two Pound piece see booklet produced by Sovereign Rarities "1887 Jubilee Head Two Pound Pieces of Queen Victoria" by David Iverson and edited by Steve Hill (DISH) where all varieties are listed in detail. This particular variation is thought to have been produced on the lowest day of mint production of this commemorative coin on 8th August 1887 when 350 coins only were produced. The surviving numbers available today seem to support the theory.
