Victoria 1887 Two-Pounds, Golden Jubilee Issue, dies 2b/2
Victoria (1837-1901), gold Two Pounds, 1887, Jubilee type crowned bust left, eye has vertical die flaw, J.E.B. initials on truncation, legend surrounding with a few stops doubled, VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:, rev. St George and dragon right, smaller date in exergue, small B.P to upper right of exergue, weight 15.97g (Dyer 2b/2; Hill T25; cf. Schneider 654; DISH C206; S.3865). Toned, rim bruise on reverse, almost extremely fine.
Calendar year mintage of 91,345.
The Latin legend translates as "Victoria by the grace of God," on obverse and as "Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith" on the reverse.
The 1887 gold Two Pounds was only the second currency piece ever produced, with the previous being that dated 1823 in the reign of George IV; and was minted to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Victoria's reign.
