Victoria 1887 Spink brass pattern Sixpence PF55 milled edge, JRT truncation R5, ex Bole
Victoria (1837-1901), Pattern Sixpence, 1887, struck in brass, produced by Joseph Rochelle Thomas with Spink & Son, ornate and detailed crowned and veiled bust of Queen Victoria three quarters left, J R T raised on truncation, legend in English commences at bottom within twin linear circles surrounding, +VICTORIA. BY. THE. GRACE. OF. GOD. QUEEN. OF. GREAT. BRITAIN. EMP: OF. INDIA, cross pommée initial cross, beaded border and raised rim both sides, rev. inverted die axis, Royal Arms quartered within Order of the Garter with crowned helm above, crowned lion supporter facing inwards to left, unicorn facing inwards to right both standing on leaf frame, SIX PENCE above, date in Roman numerals below, thistle, rose and shamrock emblems below, edge milled, weight 2.60g (ESC 1784A R5; Bull 3312 R5). Toned with surface marks and nicks, some spots, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as PF55, extremely rare.
NGC Certification 8537539-024, we note this coin is currently the second finest graded of two examples at NGC, the other being one step finer. NGC have opted to label this coin as silvered brass, though there is no sign of silvering.
This variety has italic JRT added to the truncation in raised letters with the milled edge with regular inverted die axis, this coin is clearly a different metal finish to the coin in the previous lot.
