Regular price Sale price £175

Victoria (1837-1901), silver Sixpence, 1887, withdrawn type issued for Golden Jubilee, variety with R over V in Queen's name, Jubilee crowned bust left, with initials J.E.B. in field below bust, the J with just a slight bottom curvature to left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITT: REGINA F: D:, first R struck over a V, the colon after BRITT with weak lower pellet, letter Rs with full lower serifs, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, within Order of the Garter, French motto on garter, HONI. SOIT. QUI MAL. Y. PENSE., date below, 2.86g (Bull 3266 R3; Davies 1153 dies 2+A; ESC 1752A R2; S.3928). Toned with some patchiness, light surface marks, otherwise a bold very fine and a very rare variety.

Mintage 3,675,607 includes all three types of 1887 currency sixpence whether young head, or Jubilee withdrawn and value reverses.

The Latin legend translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."

The previous owner noted that the R of GRATIA on the coin shows perhaps a small part of a V sticking out of the vertical of this letter. The R over V in the Queen's name is a nice obvious variation.

Provenance:

Ex Thorburn Collection of 1887, Sovereign Rarities Auction 19, 23rd September 2025, lot 138 part.
