Victoria 1887 proof Five-Pounds PF66 ULTRA CAMEO, highest graded at NGC
Victoria (1837-1901), gold Proof Five Pounds, 1887, Jubilee type crowned bust left, J.E.B. initials on truncation for engraver Joseph Edgar Boehm, legend and border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:, rev. St George armed with sword in flowing cape and helmet on horseback slaying dragon right, broken lance on left of ground-line, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue after engraver Benedetto Pistrucci (W&R 285; S.3864). Very attractive proof surfaces, only the very lightest of hairlines visible in the slab,one small tone spot in gold alloy behind bust, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as PF66 Ultra Cameo therefore tied for the highest grade with this service for this type of coin, of which they have assessed 86 pieces to date, therefore extremely rare in this condition.

The 1887 gold Proof Five Pounds was minted to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Victoria's reign. We note that both NGC ad PCGS have to date graded and slabbed 86 pieces each - total 172 pieces across both services. Of these the highest two PCGS have graded are one also as a 66 and one other as a 66+ the latter of which we note sold at a New York auction in a January 2018 for $138,000 including buyer's premium.
