Such currency sets were issued as mementos of the 50thanniversary Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign in 1887. The new design of bust used for the first time in 1887 by Joseph Edgar Boehm did not prove popular in the long run and received much criticism at the time for the "toy" size crown upon the head of Queen Victoria. This eventually culminated in the "old head" design being introduced only six years later from 1893.
