Victoria 1880 Sovereign, second 8 over 7, short tail, small BP, WW buried, 1 no serif

Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1880, with second 8 of date over 7, no serif to top of 1 in date, first young filleted head left of the third style, WW buried in truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA,rev.St George and dragon right, short tail to horse, with two extra spurs in upper left curve, date in exergue, small B P initials to upper right, barely visible, weight 7.95g (Bentley -; Marsh 91BB; S.3856B).Toned unevenly with handling and bagmarks, a bold fine.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of the Britain's, Defender of the Faith."

We note the short tail with the overdate is seldom seen when compared to the long tail variety. We also note a further diagnostic of this reverse not mentioned before in that the left foot of St George that shows under the belly of the horse has a distinct gap between its heel and the rear left thigh of the horse. On the long tail varieties this gap is hardly there with the foot placed closer to the thigh. Also the dragon wing tip over this foot varies in its protrusion between the two reverses.
