Victoria 1879 Halfpenny

Victoria (1837-1901), bronze Halfpenny, 1879, "bun" type laureate and draped bust left, thicker shorter hair at nape of neck, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D: rev. Britannia seated right on rock with trident and shield, lighthouse to left without windows, ship to right, date in exergue, denomination in words and toothed border surrounding, weight 5.80g (Fr.339 dies 15+O; S.3956). Dusky tone with much lustre, otherwise good extremely fine, practically as struck.

The Latin legend on obverse translates as "Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."

Provenance:

Ex Cheshire Collection, Goldberg Auction 31, 1st June 2005, lot 3127 when slabbed and graded as NGC MS64 BN.
