Victoria (1837-1901), gold Proof Sovereign, 1871, plain edge, first young filleted head left of the third style, raised W.W. buried in truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA,rev.struck en medaille, St George and dragon right, short tail to horse with two strand terminus, lower arm of dragon with some detached claws, date in exergue, large B.P. initials to upper right, edge, plain (Bentley 626; WR 319; Hill 84C R2; EGC 1223; S.3856). Brilliant with lightly toned cameo design, as pleasing an example as one would desire, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as PF64 Ultra Cameo.

These rare plain edge proofs were struck with this being the first year for the reintroduction of Pistrucci's iconic St George and the dragon.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of the Britain's, Defender of the Faith."
