Victoria 1863 Penny Die number 4 below date, extremely rare

Victoria (1837-1901),bronze Penny, 1863, die 4 below date, laureate "bun style" bust left, legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:,rev.Britannia seated right with trident and shield, denomination in words surrounding, date in exergue, weight 8.99g (Fr.47, dies 6+G R20; Gouby BP1863E J/g; Peck 1657; Satin 49; S.3954).Worn from circulation with patches of light corrosion, nick and marks, date and die number most clear, fine and extremely rare, the first we have handled for sale.

The abbreviated Latin legend on the obverse translates as "Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith."

At the time of Peck's writing in 1958 only two examples of this coin were known which has steadily increased to the present day to more than ten known. The reverses were numbered by the date as a means of quality control by the Royal Mint at the time to principally see how well the coins were struck by the machinery and there operators but also to perhaps track how they fared in circulation. 1863 was the year other coins produced by the RM also began to have their reverses die numbered for similar reasons, but with bronze coins it was the shortest lived being only for this year and on the penny only up to die number 5 has been discovered thus far and die 1 has not yet been positively identified.
