This coin is part of a series of ten decimal patterns proposed dated 1857 of varying denomination and size. This is the smallest of these patterns. There had been debate and discussion over decimal coinage since 1841 and a Decimal Association was formed in 1854 to keep the ideas and interests alive which led to these patterns, as there was a demand for smaller and lighter coinage. Patterns were produced dated 1857 and a later series dated 1859, all are extremely rare today.
