Victoria 1856/5 Sovereign, MS61, ex Bentley and Hammersley
Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1856, with 6 over 5 in date, second young filleted head left, W.W. incuse on truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, laurel wreath surrounding, emblems below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:, weight 7.96g (Bentley 420 this coin; Hill 39A R2; Bull EGC 1121 R2; S.3852D). Toned, with some light surface marks and hairlines, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as MS61, a rare date but especially with this overdate and with an impeccable provenance.
NGC certification 6674823-017 - the overdate not noted on the Hammersley Collection label.
Calendar year mintage 4,801,160.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "Queen of the Britain's, Defender of the Faith."
