Victoria 1854 Sovereign, WW raised, rare

Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1854, second young filleted head left, W.W. raised on truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, laurel wreath surrounding, emblems below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: weight 7.97g (Bentley 70; Marsh 37A R2; S.3852C). Toned, almost very fine and the rarest variety of 1854.

Calendar year mintage 3,589,611.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "Queen of the Briton's, Defender of the Faith."

Only a smaller proportion of the calendar year mintage would have continued with a WW raised obverse, the last year it appears for this type of head, with the majority having the WW incuse.
