Victoria 1845 Sovereign, with 4 of date struck over inverted 4, MS61 finest graded
Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1845, variety with 4 in date over inverted 4, first young filleted head left, W.W. raised on truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, laurel wreath surrounding, emblems below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: (Bentley 50; Bull EGC 1074 R2; Hill 28A R2; S.3852). Toned, some light surface marks, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as MS61 and very rare, especially this well preserved with a nice clear overstrike.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "Queen of the Briton's, Defender of the Faith."

Ex Spink and Son Ltd, purchased November 2000 when this variety was first discovered for this date.
