Victoria 1845 silver Groat, young head
Victoria (1837-1901),silver Groat, 1845, young filleted head left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REGINA F: D:,rev.Britannia seated right with trident and shield, date in exergue, FOUR PENCE legend surrounding, weight 1.90g (Bull 3337; Robinson p.168 plate 89; ESC 1940; S.3913). Some hairlines, otherwise near or about extremely fine.
The Latin legend translates as "Victoria by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."
This actual coin is illustrated as plate 89 in Silver Pennies and Linen Towels by Dr Brian Robinson in relation to page 168 where he remarks that the die used for the obverse bust is interchangeable between the currency Groat and Maundy Threepence.
