Victoria 1843/8 Sovereign MS63 ex Bentley Collection
Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1843, with the 3 struck over an 8, first young filleted head left, W.W. raised on truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, laurel wreath surrounding, emblems below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: (Bentley 403 this coin; Marsh -; S.3852). Toned, with some proof-like brilliance, some hairlines, has been graded and slabbed by PCGS as MS63 with the variety noted, only three examples ever graded, extremely rare.
Calendar year mintage 5,981,968.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "Queen of the Britain's, Defender of the Faith."
Provenance:
Ex Bentley Collection, part 2, Baldwin Auction 76, 27th September 2012, lot 403 realised £3,120.
This extremely rare variety was only discovered in 2010.
