Victoria 1839 copper Quarter-Farthing
Victoria (1837-1901), copper Quarter-Farthing, 1839, young filleted head left, legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REGINA F:D:, rev. crowned denomination and date in three lines, emblems below, weight 1.17g (Peck 1608; Robinson p.168 and plate 80 this coin; S.3953). Toned extremely fine and rare initial date.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Victoria by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith"
This actual coin is illustrated as plate 80 in Silver Pennies and Linen Towels by Dr Brian Robinson in relation to page 168 where he remarks that the die used for the obverse bust is interchangeable between the Quarter-Farthing and the Maundy Twopence and the pattern Quarter-Sovereign dated 1853.
