Before any coin design is approved by the Royal Mint for public issue, its dies must be tested by manufacturing a small number of trial pieces. These trials are carefully inspected to ensure every element has been properly rendered, and the majority are later destroyed. This represents an unprecedented public offering of a unique Royal Mint trial piece, finished to a Proof standard and distinguished through a high-security Royal Mint trial hologram and London Assay Office hallmark. Trials of this nature are extremely rare, and this coin can truly be said to be a stand-alone piece of numismatic history.
