Theodosius II ruled the Eastern Roman Empire for nearly half a century, from 402 to 450 AD, making his reign one of the longest in Roman history. Crowned as co-emperor at just a few months old, he inherited the throne at age seven following the death of his father, Arcadius. Because of his youth, governance was initially managed by regents, most notably the capable praetorian prefect Anthemius, who oversaw the construction of the famous Theodosian Walls to protect Constantinople from outside invasions. When Theodosius grew into his role, he earned a reputation as a deeply pious, scholarly, and bookish ruler who preferred a quiet life of faith and manuscript collection over leading troops on the battlefield, though he maintained capable generals to defend his borders against Huns, Persians, and Germanic tribes. One of his greatest historical achievements was the Codex Theodosianus, a massive, comprehensive compilation of Roman laws completed in 438 AD that unified centuries of imperial legislation and laid foundational principles for future European legal systems. He was also a major patron of Christianity, funding churches and involving himself heavily in the complex theological debates of the 5^th century Church, which included presiding over the build up to major church councils. Though he lacked the aggressive martial spirit of earlier emperors, Theodosius II successfully preserved and secured the Eastern Roman Empire during a difficult era when the Western Roman Empire was rapidly collapsing, leaving behind a secure capital, a codified legal system, and a lasting legacy of Christian imperial administration.
