The Repentance of Peter, Netherlands, late 16th century.

The Repentance of Peter, Netherlands, late 16th century, gilt-bronze, cast and chased plaquette, unattributed, St Peter in penitent attitude, keys before him, regrets his denial of Christ as the cockerel crows, 72 x 103mm, integral suspension loop, (Weber 1043 [Spanish]; Warren 2014, no. 506 [cf Ashmolean accession no. WA1897.CDEF.B864]). Good very fine and rare.

Ex. Neil A. Goodman Collection, Morton & Eden 28/11/2019, lot 311.

The example at the Ashmolean was presented by the renown collector C. D. E. Fortnum, in 1897. The present piece is identical in size and fabric, including the style of suspension ring. While Weber listed these pieces as Spanish, Jeremy Warren reattributes them to the Netherlands and of course there was a strong connection between the two countries at the time.
