The death of the apparently honest and impartial magistrate intrigued and shocked late 17th century London, and has never been solved. Jesuit priests, the Pope, Titus Oates and even Charles II himself have been accused over the years and one theory, first put forward by Godfrey's staff and still considered feasible by some today, is that his death was suicide. Godfrey was strangled, his neck was broken and he was impaled on a sword.
