Hans Reinhart the Elder (ca. 1500/10 - 1581) was a German goldsmith and medallist working for the Court of Saxony in Dresden. He is thought to have used wooden models to cast his work, not stone which would have been the norm for goldsmith work.
The present medal is a variation of another similar medal which has a border and inscription. On the present medal, some elements of the narrative are "off flan". It's worth noting however that the present medal is not just a cut-down version of the medal with border and inscription. Aside from the obvious difference, the legend, the trees in the background are different, the soldiers are dressed differently and the treatment of the trunk of the tree of knowledge also differs. It would seem that some punches were reused and some others recreated to produce this, a distinct medal.
