Suffolk, 17th Century token, Beccles Farthing, 1670

17th Century Token, Suffolk, Beccles, Town Farthing, 1670, house or barn with sheep pen within outer toothed border, rev. four line inscription, cinquefoil stops at start, *A* / BECCLES / FARTHING / 16B70, outer beaded border surrounding, weight 1.25g (Boyne 1; BW5). Toned with one central patch of striking weakness, otherwise very fine.

The same view of the building and sheep pen can be seen today on the seal of the Corporation of Beccles dated 1584 and it was at a meeting held on 8th March 1670 the a grant for procuring £10 worth of tokens was given, the dies for striking of which are still preserved in the Corporation chest.
