Stephen Penny Swansea Mint, Moneyer Henri Extremely Rare

Stephen (1135-54), silver Penny, Watford type (c.1136-45), Swansea Mint, struck from local dies, Moneyer Henri, crowned bust with sceptre right, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding, +S[TI]EFN REIS, rev. cross moline, lis in each angle, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding, +HEII[--]MI, weight 1.04g (Boon 19-23 var.; Allen BNJ 2012, p.68 and 115; N.873; S.1278). Toned, 60% on target striking with 40% flat, undulating flan with slight lamination on reverse, a bold very fine for the visible parts of this crude local issue and of the highest rarity.

Swansea was a Baronial outpost at the time of King Stephen, and nearby was the scene of a battle on the 1st January 1136 where the Welsh slayed 500 Anglo Norman colonists.
