Stephen Penny defaced die Penny Thetford

Stephen (1135-54), silver Penny, East Anglian erased obverse die issue of Watford type (c.1140-45), Thetford Mint, Moneyer Baldwin, crowned bust with sceptre right, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding, thick raised cross over whole obverse, +STIEFNE R, rev. cross moline, lis in each angle, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding, +BALDEWI: ON : TE:, weight 1.07g (Mack 142; N.924; S.1283). Dark tone, with evidence of crack repair, otherwise a bold very fine for this very rare issue and much better than usually seen.

In the early 1140s the centralised system of government in King Stephen's England broke down and the country became divided into parts that were loyal to the King or those that were loyal to a local Baron or the Empress Matilda. Coins issued in such places no longer loyal to the King were issued with his obverse type defaced with a bold raised cross, East Anglia being one such part of the Eastern side of the country.
