Sicily, Selinos, Silver Stater

Sicily, Selinos (c. 540-515 B.C.), Silver Didrachm. Wild parsley-leaf, rev. incuse square divided diagonally into ten triangular segments, some raised and others lowered, 9.05g. (Arnold-Biucchi 2; SNG ANS 676). An excellent and well-struck example of this issue, without the striking crack usually encountered, with a beautiful iridescent cabinet tone, extremely fine.

The wild parsley-leaf ('selinon') on the obverse of this coin is no doubt meant as a punning type for the city of Selinos.
