Sicily, Leontinoi (c. 440-430 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm. Laureate head of Apollo facing left, his hair rolled, with locks hanging before and behind his ear, rev. LEO-NT-I-N-ON, head of a roaring lion facing left, its jaws open and tongue protruding, three barley-grains and a leaf around, 17.94g., 2h (Boehringer, Essays Price, pl. 12, 53 (this obverse die), 52 (this reverse die); Rizzo, pl. XXIII, 22 (these dies); SNG ANS 240 (these dies)). A small metal-flaw in obverse field, possibly as a result of overstriking, otherwise extremely fine.
