Septimius Severus, Silver Denarius, Victory in Britain.

Septimius Severus (AD 193-211), silver Denarius, Rome, AD 210-211, SEVERVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head right, rev. VICTORIAE BRIT, Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm, 2.98g, 7h (RIC 332). Extremely fine, scarce.

While the coin was struck in Rome, AVGVSTVS BRITANNICVS is a title representing Septimius Severus's campaigns in Britain - the reverse type proclaiming his victory. In AD 208, Severus arrived with his sons and an army of perhaps 40,000 soldiers intent on quelling rebellion in Caledonia. His victory was short-lived though and soon after his death in York his sons sought a political solution to the fighting, and returned to Rome. The empire's frontier was ultimately withdrawn to Hadrian's Wall and Romans would never again embark on a significant campaign into Scotland.
