Scotland, William the Lion (1165-1218), silver Penny, posthumous issue under Alexander II, Roxburgh mint, joint moneyers Peris and Adam, short cross and stars coinage, phase C (c.1230), crowned head with sceptre left, legend seemingly retrograde and beaded border surrounding, rev. short voided cross pattée, six-pointed star in each angle, legend and beaded borders surrounding, reads +PERISADAM DE ROC:, weight 1.39g (cf. Burns 5e, fig. 66B; cf. SCBI 35: [Ashmolean], 82; S.5034). Toned, very fine and unusual in the retrograde obverse legend arrangement.

As Alexander II was only 16 years old on the death of his Father William the Lion, much of his reign was one of insurrection, intrigue and invasion. The coinage continued to be issued at this unstable time in the form of William the Lion for some 20 years, and this coin seems to be a continuation of the last life time issue of William, with a double moneyer name with Peris and Adam working together at Roxburgh.
