Scotland, James VI 30-Shillings First Coinage

Scotland, James VI (1567-1625), silver Thirty Shillings, first coinage after accession to English throne (1603-25), type II, equestrian portrait of armoured King on horseback right, holding upright sword, ground line below, legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, initial mark thistle head, .IACOBVS. D. G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. &. HIB. REX., rev. quartered shield of arms, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark thistle, .QVÆ. DEVS. CONIVNXIT. NEMO. SEPERET., weight 14.69g (Burns 14, fig.984; S.5504). Toned, weakly struck in two opposing points of legend, otherwise very fine for issue and a little better than the plate coin in the Spink catalogue which has the same striking weakness.

The Latin legends translate as "James by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" on the obverse, and "What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder" on the reverse, a Psalm taken from the Bible.

Provenance:

Ex Patrick Finn, Spring 1999, List 15, item 401.

Ex Spink Numismatic Circular, April 2012, item SC0906.
