D.G.R. SCOTORVM., rev. crowned coat of arms, Scottish Lion rampant left, lis adorned frame, reads SPERO MELIORA, weight 4.60g (SCBI 35 [Ashmolean], 1161-64; SCBI 58 [Edinburgh], 1278-82; SCBI 71:- Stewartby; Burns 4-5, fig. 954; S.5458).An exceptional piece, deeply engraved dies, some slight weakness probably in the die reflected in parts of legend and the horse's tail, otherwise extremely fine, rare date. A fetching coin, superb.
The Latin legends translate as on obverse "James the Sixth by the grace of God, King of Scotland" and on the reverse "I aspire or hope to greater things."
