Scotland, James III (1460-88), Regal Issue, "Black Money" Farthing, type I, large crown with three points, beaded circle and legend surrounding, mostly off-flan or illegible, [I R]EX [SCOTORVM], rev. large saltire cross, tiny saltire either side, beaded circle and legend surrounding, mostly off-flan or illegible, [VILLA. EDINB]VR, weight 0.36g (SCBI Stewartby 72:1022; Stewart 1967 p.144, fig.113; S.5305). Water worn, toned, fair and extremely rare, the first time we have ever offered one for sale.

If the legends were legible they would translate as "James King of the Scottish" on obverse and "Town of Edinburgh" on the reverse.

Provenance:

Ex Angus Sutherland Collection of Scottish Coins, Spink Coin Auction 64, 23rd June 1988, lot 28 and plate I sold for £150 hammer.
