Scotland, James III, Bishop Kennedy Crux Penny, upward orb variety
Scotland, James III (1460-88), copper Crux Pellit ecclesiastical issue under Bishop James Kennedy, type IIa, "three-penny" Penny, orb upward, beaded circles and legend surrounding, IACOBVS DEI GRA REX, rev. Latin cross in double tressure of four arcs, annulet on each lower cusp either side of cross, beaded circles and legend surrounding, CRVXo PELLITo OIEo CRImo, weight 1.37g (S.5309). Weak in one half both sides otherwise about very fine.
The Latin legends translate as "James by the grace of God King" and on the reverse "the Cross drives away all sin."
Bishop James Kennedy (1408-65) was the Grandson of King Robert III via his daughter Princess Mary Stewart and Sir James Kennedy of Dunure. He was appointed Bishop of St Andrews on the 8th June 1440 by Pope Eugenius IV, having been elected Bishop of Dunkeld since 1st July 1437 and previously being Canon and Sub-Deacon. He founded St Salvator's College in 1450 at the University of St Andrews. He served as one of the seven Regents of Scotland during the minority of King James III from 1460 which is when this coinage most likely came about. He died on 24th May 1465 and is buried in St Salvator's Chapel.
