Scotland, David II Penny, first coinage, second issue, pellet on sceptre handle

Scotland, David II (1329-71), silver Penny, first coinage, second issue (c.1351-57), probably minted at Edinburgh, crowned youthful head left, large pellet on sceptre handle, beaded circles and small letter legend surrounding, +DAVID. DEI: GRACIAI, colon stop after DEI and extra I to legend, rev. long cross, six pointed pierced mullet in each angle, REX SCO TTO RVM, weight 1.21g (Burns 17, fig.240; S.5088). Toned, die clashing evident with ghosting of revere cross onto obverse and some weak areas, otherwise a bold very fine, the face clear where not affected by ghosting, an unusual variety.

The Latin legends translate as "David, by the grace of God" on the obverse and "King of the Scottish" on the reverse.
