Scotland, Charles II (1649-85), silver Merk, 1669, stop after date, first coinage, type II, thistle head below laureate and draped bust right, outer beaded circle with legend surrounding, all Gs die flawed shut, CAROLVS. II. DEI: GRA. rev. with a 9 o'clock die axis, value XIII over 4 at centre of crowned cruciform shields, crowned interlinked Cs in angles, crowns intrude legend, date either side of crown to upper left, legend surrounding, .MAG BRI. FRA ET. HIB REX., edge plain, weight 6.28g (Burns 5, fig 1051; S.C.B.I. 35:1578; S.5611). Toned, well struck for issue, two obverse rim nicks and metal flaw at end of Kings name, a few light marks, otherwise good very fine for issue and the rarer stop after date variation rather than colon coupled with an unusual die axis, very rare.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the second, by the Grace of God," and on the reverse "King of Great Britain France and Ireland."
