Scotland, Charles I (1625-49), silver Forty Pence, second issue by Nicholas Briot (1636), crowned bust left to bottom of coin, value XL behind head, beaded circle and legend surrounding both sides, legend commences bottom left, CAR. D: G. SCOT. ANG. FR. & HIB. R., rev. crowned thistle, legend commences upper right, .SALVS. REIP. SVPREM. LEX., weight 1.61g (Burns 2 var. fig.1002; S.5548). Toned good very fine, a little double struck on reverse, superior to the plate coin in the Spink catalogue, very rare.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles by the Grace of God, King of Scotland, England, France and Ireland" and on the reverse "The safety of the State is the supreme law."
