Scotland, Charles I 30-Shillings First Coinage

Scotland, Charles I (1625-49), silver Thirty Shillings, first coinage (1625-34), equestrian portrait of armoured King James VI on horseback right, holding upright sword, smooth ground line below, legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, initial mark thistle head, .CAROLVS. D. G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. &. HIB. REX., rev. quartered shield of arms, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark thistle, .QVÆ. DEVS. CONIVNXIT. NEMO. SEPRET., weight 14.88g (Burns 2, fig.997; Bull 1b/S7-E (Scot) this coin; S.5541). Toned, weakly struck in two opposing points of legend, otherwise good very fine for issue and the plate coin on page 239 of the Bull reference.

The Latin legends translate as "Charles by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" on the obverse, and "What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder" on the reverse, a Psalm taken from the Bible.

Out of the 19 die varieties that Maurice Bull records of the type I coinage of Charles I depicting James VI on horseback, only this one die variety has the legend without stops.
