Scotland, Alexander III (1249-86), silver Penny, Roxburgh Mint, moneyer Andrew, first coinage (1250-80), voided long cross and stars type III, small crowned head and sceptre left, legend and outer beaded circle surrounding, +ALEXANDER REX, rev. voided long cross pommée, star of six points in each angle, beaded circles and legend surrounding, AN DR EV. ON R, the ON ligatured, weight 1.39g (Burns 26 fig.122; S.5043). Toned, weak on one quarter, otherwise a bold very fine with a great portrait.
The legend translates as "Alexander King," on the obverse and "Andrew of Roxburgh" on the reverse.
