Scotland, Alexander III (1249-86), silver Penny, first coinage, long voided cross and stars (1250-1280), Type III, St Andrews mint, moneyer Thomas crowned profile bust left, small head with neat crown, legend reads +ALEXANDER REX, the ER ligatured, rev. voided long cross, four stars of six points in angles, legend surrounds THOMAS ON ANDER, some letters ligatured, weight 1.23g (SCBI 35 [Scottish], 136; Lockett 747a; Burns type IV 69b fig. 115B; S.5043). Some porosity and weakness, near very fine, extremely rare mint.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on obverse "Alexander King", and on the reverse as "Thomas at Andrews".
