Scotland, Alexander III (1249-86), silver Penny, first coinage, long voided cross and stars (1250-1280), Type III, Glasgow mint, moneyer Walter, crowned profile bust left, small head with neat crown, legend reads +ALEXANDER REX, the ER ligatured, rev. voided long cross, four stars of six points in angles, legend surrounds WALTER ON G, weight 1.31g (SCBI 35 [Scottish], 120/A; Lockett 66b same rev die; Burns type III, 53a fig.118A; S.5043). Struck with somewhat rusty dies, portrait pleasing with especially clear obverse legends, rev some softness, mint signature clear, on an uncharacteristically full flan with a centred strike, very fine, rare.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on obverse "Alexander King", and on the reverse as "Walter at Glasgow".
