Scotland, Alexander III (1249-86), silver voided long cross Penny, first coinage (c.1250-80), type VIII, Berwick Mint, moneyer Johan, crowned head and sceptre left, sceptre head extends to legend and forms initial cross, legend and beaded circles surrounding, +ALEXANDER REX, rev. voided long cross, of six pointed star in each angle, beaded circles and legend surrounding, IOh AN ON BER, weight 1.38g (Burns 7, fig.83; S.5048). Toned, some weakness in striking, otherwise a bold very fine, rare Berwick Mint.

The legend translates as "Alexander King," on the obverse and "Johan of Berwick" on the reverse.

Johan only operates as a named moneyer at Berwick on types 7 and 8 of this coinage.
