Scotland, Alexander III First Coinage Penny

Scotland, Alexander III (1249-86), silver Penny, Perth Mint, moneyer John Cokin, first coinage (1250-80), voided long cross and stars type III, small crowned head and sceptre left, legend and outer beaded circle surrounding, +ALEXANDER REX, chair like X, rev. voided long cross pommée, star of six points in each angle, beaded circles and legend surrounding, ION CO---ON P, the ON ligatured, weight 1.29g (Burns 39 fig.112; S.5043). Toned, weak on one part of legend, otherwise a bold very fine.

The legend translates as "Alexander King," on the obverse and "John Cokin of Perth" on the reverse.
