Samanid, Nuh II b. Nasr (AH 331-343 / 943-954 AD), gold Dinar, Nishapur, AH 339, citing the deposed Abbasid Caliph al-Mustakfi, and with the name of the die engraver (Ba Harith ?) beyond the outer obverse margin, 4.38g, 2h (Album 1454). About extremely fine.
There are two names suggested for the die engravers in this series: Ba Harith and Abu Bakr. A die match to the present coin was sold by Album (Auction 39, 21 January 2021, lot 50), wherein the engraver's signature was tentatively interpreted as Ba Harith Bin Nasr. The inclusion of an engraver's signature, however enigmatic, remains an alluring element of this series.
Provenance:
Ex Morton & Eden 105 (28 November 2019), lot 98.
