Russia, Peace with Porta, 1791, gold Medal or Jeton, commemorating the Treaty of Jassy between Russia and the Ottoman Empire ending the 1787-1792 Russo-Turkish War, crowned cypher of Catherine the Great centre within laurel wreath surrounding, rev. Russian inscription across four lines, MИPЬ/CЪ ПOPTЮ/ДЕКАБРЯ 29 ДНЯ/1791 ГОДА, edge milled, 4.51g (Bitkin II 1395 R2; Diakov 225.9 R3; Fb. -; Smirnoff 321; Sev. -). Some vertical striations on reverse, graded by NGC as UNC Details (Cleaned), very rare.

The reverse inscription translates as "Peace with Porta, December 29^th 1791."

The Treaty of Jassy was a pact between the Russian and Ottoman Empires ending the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792. It saw the official ratification of the Russian Empire's increasing dominance in the Black Sea. The Treaty was signed on the 9^th January 1792 by Grand Vizier Koca Yusuf Pasha and Prince Bezborodko. The Treaty formally recognized the Russian Empire's annexation of the Crimean Khanate via the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca of 1774, and transferred Yedisan (the territory between Dniester and Bug rivers) to Russia making the Dniester the Russo-Turkish frontier in Europe, and leaving the Asiatic frontier (Kuban River) unchanged. These Jetons were struck in gold, silver and bronze to a total quantity of 30,000 pieces. It is believed that the bronze pieces were awarded to enlisted soldiers, silver to junior officers, and gold only to officers ranked colonel or above. The exact number of gold medals is unknown, but this example is the only one graded by either NGC or PCGS.
